“Come, Holy Spirit, Come!”

Here is a shorter version of my sermon on the Day of Pentecost, Sunday, May 24.
A number of years ago, in an Adult Education Class, we watched a DVD on the Holy Spirit.
After the video, someone commented, “I haven’t been giving the Holy Spirit enough credit.”
Let’s give the Holy Spirit proper credit as we explore the following questions.

1. Who is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is God.  Pretty simple, right; pretty basic.  And entirely accurate.
We had a Baptism two weeks ago for Reece Messner.
During the Baptism, we confessed our faith using the Apostles’ Creed divided into three parts, with me asking, Do you believe in God- the Father?
Do you believe in Jesus Christ- the Son of God?  Do you believe in God- the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is God, the third person of the Trinity.
We believe in (and worship and serve) one God who is revealed in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

2. What does the Holy Spirit do?
The Holy Spirit helps us come to faith in Jesus.  It’s not through our own intellect or reason that we come to faith, it’s the power of the Holy Spirit.
Martin Luther explains in the third article of the Apostles’ Creed: “I believe that by my own understanding or strength I cannot believe in Jesus Christ
my Lord or come to him, but instead, the Holy Spirit has called me through the gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, made me holy, and kept me
in the one true faith.”
The Spirit calls us to faith through the preaching/reading of the gospel.
The Holy Spirit also helps us share our faith in Jesus.  A group of people from church went on a Mission Trip to Haiti ten years ago.
One of the highlights of the trip was sharing our faith at a men’s prison in the city of Hinche.  It was not easy.
We were nervous and not sure what to say to people living in such horrid conditions.
But we did it.  And not just because we mustered up the courage.
It was the power of the Holy Spirit.  There was no other way to explain it.

3. How can we harness the power of the Holy Spirit?
Have you seen the enormous wind turbines in southern Minnesota?  The blades are up to 200 feet in length.  What do they do?
They harness the wind and generate power and electricity.
The Holy Spirit is our source for power- spiritual power.
We can’t control the Holy Spirit (the wind blows where it chooses),
but we can harness the power of the Holy Spirit.

Perhaps the best way is through prayer.  During the service for our high school graduates last week, we had the laying on of hands.
I prayed over the graduates: “Heavenly Father, for Jesus’ sake, stir up in (name) the gift of your Holy Spirit.”

On the Day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was stirred up with wind and fire.
God’s power came upon the disciples in a new way and gave them courage to preach the gospel.
The Spirit is still stirring today.  The wind is blowing and the flames are burning.
And so we pray:
Come, Holy Spirit, Come.  Stir up your power within us!  Stir us to faith in Jesus.
Stir us to live our faith with greater conviction and to share our faith with boldness.
